The Mala Donation System

Some believe that a mala protects the one who wears it. A mala is simply a necklace or garland consisting of 108 prayer beads (the beads are round except for one that is either teardrop or gourd in shape).

When you make a pledge to Hike Against Hunger, regardless of the dollar amount of your donation, you symbolically purchase one of the beads on the mala. Your name will be written on that bead. There are 108 beads on the mala, and our goal is that each bead bears a name by the time we complete the trail. The person who donates the highest dollar amount to Hike Against Hunger will be represented by the big gourd-shaped bead of the mala.

The reason we have chosen the mala donation system is so that we can wear this tangible prayer garland when we hike the Appalachian Trail, symbolically taking all of our supporters along on the expedition. When we’re on the trail, we can read the names on our malas and remember, “We are hiking because all of these people believe in what we are doing.”
