Inspiration for the Project

The idea for the project came to Erica Zelfand one day when she skipped lunch because she was running errands and didn’t have time to eat. That afternoon was long, tiring, and uncomfortable, and when she finally did eat, she realized how easy it is to access food and clean drinking water in North America. And she was overwhelmed with gratitude.

Shortly after that day Erica attended a workshop called Who Owes Who?, a presentation on third world debt and global poverty developed by the Social Justice Committee of Montreal.

Upon learning the details of hunger in the developing countries of the world, Erica realized that hunger doesn’t have to exist; that there really are solutions to the hunger problem. This knowledge inspired the creation of Hike Against Hunger - a project dedicated to generating financial aid and spreading awareness about the issue of hunger.

Timothy was inspired to join in the Hike Against Hunger as a result of two things: his recent experience in the more rural areas of North India, and following Erica’s enthusiasm to make the five month hike on the Appalachian Trail into an action against hunger. Timothy spent three months in North India as part of a study abroad program through Naropa University. He then continued to travel in more remote areas for about a month after the program. Timothy reflects: “It was a horrific sight to experience areas where there were people who couldn’t eat. Eating and drinking clean water is a basic human right which is not being met in many places. By hiking against hunger, I hope to serve as a bridge between people who want to help and an organization that is striving to make a difference in communities around the world that are in need.

Think about the way you use food in ways other than to provide nourishment: entertainment, comfort, even self-abuse. For example, if you get a donut every morning on your way to work, don’t get that donut for one week and turn the money that you saved into a pledge for Hike Against Hunger. Even the smallest donation can be a matter of life or death to another human being. And besides, donuts are bad for you!
